I was listening to the radio on the way to work this morning, and the DJ’s were talking about the way people identify themselves — or not — when they call someone on the phone. They mentioned an old “Seinfeld” episode that revolved around people just saying “It’s me” when they call someone.
This is one of my pet peeves – people who call me and assume I recognize their voice. I never take it for granted that someone recognizes my voice. I’m not very memorable to begin with and need all the help I can get. I even identify myself when I call Mrs. Poolman. “This is your husband.” Fortunately, she has only one husband so that simplifies it.
We have a number of friends who never voluntarily identify themselves. They just assume I recognize their voice when they call.
Sometimes I do… and sometimes I don’t.
Sometimes the caller ID flashes… and sometimes it doesn’t.
Sometimes I look at it… and sometimes I don’t.
Does it really matter? Common courtesy would be to not make a telephone call a guessing game.
I actually have had conversations lasting several minutes with people who were NOT the person I thought I was talking to. Boy, can that be awkward!
We have a couple Mrs. Poolman’s friends who always assume I recognize their voice when I answer the phone. Even when I do, I still ask “Who is calling?” just to press the issue. (Or as Mrs P would say “…just to be an a__hole.”)
Maybe that is why hardly anyone ever calls me. Ya think?
